Great Class

It became obvious in the first few minutes that taking this class was way smarter than trying to pick up calligraphy from the internet. Mark Lurz is a great teacher and provided excellent advice and coaching through the class. Little technique issues - both general and personal - were identified. I was amazed at how far I progressed during the class. mark quickly identified a couple of issues I was having and got them corrected before they became habits and before I got frustrated. That coaching was worth more than the cost of the class.

I left class knowing what I needed to work at to get to the point of using my new talents publicly.

Mark also made references to a couple of other scripts that build on what he taught - I am now starting to work at getting comfortable with those. This new talent also allows me to incorporate italic script into my regular writing when I use a couple of my stub nib fountain pens - like the Edison pen I just picked up.

Intro to Italics

This course is called Intro to Calligraphy but it should probably be called Intro to Italics, since that's the only script taught. In any case, I can't recommend this workshop enough. Mark Lurz is the president and co-founder of the Calligraphic Arts Guild of Toronto, so you are truly learning at the knee of a master. Everyone in my class was a complete beginner, so we were all starting from scratch and no one felt intimidated. Mr. Lurz is encouraging, funny and a superb teacher. I can't wait to take more classes with him!
